Khavda solar park orders 100 MWh vanadium flow battery

SolarNews Brief

A 16.7 MW/100 MWh vanadium redox flow battery has been ordered for India's Khavda renewable energy park in Gujarat. Its 5.9-hour duration will add long-duration, non-lithium storage to a site planned to reach 30 GW of renewable capacity by the end of the decade.

The system will connect at a 33 kV pooling substation and is designed for a 25-year operating life. The winning bidder will provide operations and maintenance for the first 10 years, placing lifecycle performance alongside upfront delivery in the procurement. Because flow batteries separate power rating from energy duration through external electrolyte tanks, the project will provide a significant utility-scale test of vanadium storage under Indian grid and climate conditions.
