India solar boom runs into grid and storage curtailment crunch

SolarNews Brief

India curtailed nearly 11 TWh of solar generation over the past 15 months as transmission limits, inflexible coal plants and limited storage constrained the grid. The unused solar output was enough to power about 10 million homes, underlining that India’s next clean-energy bottleneck is system flexibility rather than project construction alone.

AP, citing government data and analysis from Ember, reported that India now has more than 300 GW of clean power capacity but still cannot absorb all available solar output during peak generation hours. Gujarat and Rajasthan account for nearly half of India’s solar capacity, creating transmission congestion in western corridors. India has about 3 GW of battery storage and 7.4 GW of pumped storage in operation, while planners expect roughly 74 GW of storage need by 2032. For solar developers, the signal is clear: storage, transmission and flexible thermal operations are becoming bankability issues.
