India targets 47.24 GW of BESS capacity for future grid stability

India’s storage requirement is projected to rise to 47.24 GW / 236 GWh of BESS by 2031-32, according to SolarQuarter’s report on government planning. The buildout would require about INR 3.49 lakh crore of investment and is being supported by transmission-charge waivers and market reforms.

SolarQuarter reports that India’s BESS requirement is estimated at 8.68 GW / 34 GWh by 2026-27 before scaling to 47.24 GW / 236 GWh by 2031-32. Pumped storage is also expected to grow to 26.69 GW / 175 GWh by 2031-32, taking the combined grid-storage investment requirement toward INR 4.78 lakh crore. The government has extended ISTS charge waivers for eligible BESS and PSP projects and allowed storage assets to provide ancillary services, making storage central to renewable integration and real-time grid balancing.
