RWE starts 236 MW / 470 MWh battery build at Germany’s Hambach mine

SolarNews Brief

RWE has started construction of a 236 MW / 470 MWh battery energy storage system at the Hambach opencast mine in Germany. The project is expected to enter operation in 2027 and is part of roughly 1.7 GW of large-scale storage RWE is building in Germany.

SolarQuarter reports that preparatory work on the three-hectare Hambach site began at the end of 2025 and the first of 128 lithium-ion battery containers has been delivered. RWE says the system will help balance wind and solar fluctuations in fractions of a second. The location is significant because Hambach already hosts about 50 MWac of solar and a smaller 4.1 MW / 8.1 MWh battery, showing how former lignite sites are being repurposed for grid flexibility.
