AfDB approves EUR 100 million loan for Morocco battery gigafactory

The African Development Bank has approved a EUR 100 million loan to Gotion Power Morocco for an integrated LFP battery gigafactory. The first phase is planned at 10 GWh of battery cells and packs, with a potential expansion path to 100 GWh.

AfDB says the project will be Africa’s first integrated lithium iron phosphate battery manufacturing plant and a strategic manufacturing hub for the region. The first phase will produce 10 GWh of battery cells and packs for electric vehicles, with expansion plans that could reach 100 GWh. For solar and wind markets, local battery manufacturing is important because storage is becoming a core enabler for higher renewable integration across African grids.
