Australia’s first 8-hour battery moves to full operations in New South Wales

SolarNews Brief

RWE has received approval from AEMO and Transgrid to operate the Limondale battery at its full 50 MW / 400 MWh capacity in New South Wales. The project is described as Australia’s first eight-hour battery, giving the grid a longer-duration storage resource next to an existing solar farm.

The Limondale BESS is located near Balranald and is co-located with RWE’s 249 MW Limondale solar farm. Its eight-hour duration is important because it can move daytime solar generation into evening demand periods, rather than only providing short-duration grid services. The commissioning is a practical milestone for Australia’s storage market as coal retirements increase the need for firm renewable capacity.
