Bangladesh rooftop solar becomes up to 70% cheaper than grid power after tariff hike

SolarNews Brief

IEEFA says Bangladesh’s June 2026 electricity tariff increase has made rooftop solar substantially cheaper than grid power for industrial and commercial users. Rooftop systems can generate power at about BDT 3.5-4/kWh, compared with revised industrial daytime tariffs of BDT 11.56/kWh and evening peak tariffs of BDT 16.06/kWh.

Bangladesh raised electricity tariffs from June 2026 as imported LNG, coal and oil costs widened the power-sector deficit to around BDT 5/kWh. IEEFA estimates that industrial users can save at least BDT 7.56/kWh by self-generating from rooftop solar, before also avoiding the 5% VAT charged on grid electricity. The analysis says the new tariff structure should accelerate rooftop PV, battery storage and efficiency investments among manufacturers seeking lower costs and stronger energy security.
