EU solar share tops 20% of demand for three straight months

SolarNews Brief

Solar supplied more than 20% of EU electricity demand in May, June, and July for the first time, according to Fraunhofer ISE Energy-Charts data. Latvia set a new EU record with solar meeting 49% of demand in June, while Germany, Switzerland, and Austria also posted record seasonal shares.

pv magazine reports that solar covered 20.3% of EU demand in May, 21.1% in June, and a preliminary 21.5% in July, compared with 17.3% to 18.8% during the same period last year. Germany remained above 30% for three consecutive months, Switzerland stayed above 25%, and Austria exceeded its previous solar-share record in each of the three months. The milestone shows how quickly PV is reshaping European summer power balances and raises the value of flexibility, storage, and market design.
