Hawaiian Electric seeks 1,650 GWh of renewables and 465 MW of grid-forming storage

The Integrated Grid Planning RFP is designed to modernize Hawaii’s generation fleet and reduce dependence on oil-fired power as electricity demand rises. Hawaiian Electric says the plan includes nearly 1,650 GWh of solar and wind resources, 465 MW of grid-forming resources such as solar generation plus battery storage, and 111 MW of firm capacity. For solar developers, the tender is significant because island grids increasingly require renewable projects to deliver reliability services as well as energy.
