Brazil publishes rules for its first national battery storage auction

SolarNews Brief

Brazil’s Ministry of Mines and Energy has published guidelines for the country’s first structured battery energy storage auction. The measure is designed to contract reserve capacity from new electrochemical battery systems and improve the reliability of the national interconnected grid.

The 2026 auction framework includes one track for nationally accredited battery systems and another open track for all battery storage projects. Eligible projects must be new, connected to the Sistema Interligado Nacional, and able to provide contracted capacity under reserve power contracts. Technical requirements include at least 30 MW of minimum availability, four hours of continuous operation, 85% minimum round-trip efficiency, a six-hour maximum full recharge time, and grid-forming capabilities where required by ONS and EPE.
