AirTrunk urges Australia to use data centres as clean-energy anchor tenants

AirTrunk says Australia should treat large data centres as anchor tenants for new renewable generation, storage, and transmission investment. The argument follows a national policy push requiring large data centres to underwrite at least as much clean energy and firming capacity as they consume.

Energy-Storage.News reports that AirTrunk’s Sabooh Whitelaw made the case at the Australian Clean Energy Summit in Sydney on July 28. Data centres account for about 2% of National Electricity Market demand today, but the Clean Energy Council projects that share could rise to around 10% by 2050. AirTrunk argues that credible long-term digital demand can help bring forward bankable solar, storage, and grid projects if the framework allows flexible contracting and realistic delivery timelines.
