Hydrostor wins grid approval for 200 MW long-duration storage in Australia

SolarNews Brief

Hydrostor has secured grid connection approval for its 200 MW / 1,600 MWh Silver City compressed-air energy storage project in Broken Hill, New South Wales. The eight-hour facility is designed to support renewable generation, improve grid reliability and provide backup power for the region.

The approval from AEMO and Transgrid confirms the project has passed a critical connection requirement for the New South Wales transmission network. Silver City will store surplus electricity as compressed air in an underground cavern and dispatch power through a turbine when needed. Hydrostor says 50 MW / 250 MWh will be reserved for backup power to Broken Hill and far-west NSW during network outages. Long-duration storage of this type is becoming more important as Australian grids add more solar and wind while managing evening peaks and outage resilience.
