France’s cumulative solar capacity reaches 33 GW after 1.5 GW first-quarter additions

SolarNews Brief

France connected 1,495 MW of new solar capacity in the first quarter of 2026, taking cumulative PV capacity to 33 GW, according to SDES data reported by pv magazine. The total includes 32.1 GW in mainland France and confirms that the French solar market is still growing despite a slightly slower quarter than Q1 2025.

New additions were led by larger systems in capacity terms, while sub-9 kW installations represented most new connection counts. Metropolitan solar production reached 6.6 TWh in the quarter, and output excluding self-consumption covered 4.6% of electricity demand. Self-consumption also continued to rise, with 62% of PV installations and 19% of installed capacity producing electricity that was fully or partially self-consumed.
